John B Dixon

As per the last post I've started looking at John B Dixon, who I am now sure is actually John Robert Dixon. If you look at the census return I'm sure the B which is transcribed is actually an R - especially when you compare with the R on Railway on the same return in the same handwriting!

Off I go in search of John Robert!

McDonnell Update

Yesterday I received the death certificate for Sydney McDonnell who accidentally drowned in the River Humber in 1926 aged 7 :o( Sydney would have been my granddad's brother. His death certificate said he was the nephew and adopted son of Harry Dixon of 42 Lee Smith Street. Harry would have been Alice Dixon's brother and can be found on the Crowle Street Kids website (link in sidebar) living at 42 Lee Smith Street from 1935.

Harry is listed as living with a Sarah whom I assume was his wife I've narrowed it down to Sarah J LONGSTER in 1907 or Sarah A STOW in 1915 from Yorkshire BMD - I will have to await the 1911 census to confirm I think.

I've ordered Sydney's birth certificate as my records so far place Edward McDonnell in Australia in 1915 in the Australian Imperial Force. His papers suggest they were passed to the department of repatriation in about 1931/32. So far I've been unable to find Edward coming back to the UK, or Alice going out to Australia. Sydney's birth was registered in Q4 of 1918.

Using the Crowle Street Kids website I've managed to find a marriage for Edith Dixon, another of Alice's siblings, to a William Rawson in 1920, and I think four children Ethel, Vera, Jeffrey and Betty. Now hopefully soon I'll be able to put together Harry's marriage and find out who Sydney's adoptive mother was.

Last left on the list for Alice's siblings is John B Dixon born abt 1883.

More Unknown Photos

Following on from the funky new addition in the sidebar, here are some more of my unknown pictures. No idea on the two ladies at the top, I'm thinking that the lady on the bottom photo may be a Dixon?? I'm also thinking the lady in these two other photos is probably a Dixon too.......










.....just because she so reminds me of my Grandad, and the photo I have of my Great Grandmother. I think my Grandad inherited the Dixon genes - although I don't have a picture of my Great Grandfather to prove this as yet.....I live in hope!!!

Granny Dixon - Pitts Terrace

Following on from my post the other day about the Crowle Street Kids (link on the left) website, I've uploaded the picture that started my journey to find this website. Granny Dixon, as noted on the back of the photo is, I am sure, Emma Grainge. Emma Grainge was born in about 1861 in Skirlaugh, Hornsea, Yorkshire, England. Her parents were John Grainge and Jane Short.

In 1882 Emma married John Thomas Dixon in Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire.

Emma and John had four children John B Dixon, born abt 1883, Alice Dixon born 1884 Harry born abt 1887 and Edith born abt 1897.

On searching for more information on Pitts Terrace so I could find out more about the photo I came accross the Crowle Street Kids website and was surprised to find that Emma Dixon was living on Pitts Terrace at number 14 during the 1940's and 50's. She appears to have been living with her daughter Edith and her daughters husband William Rawson. Also living there was Edith and William's son Jeffrey Rawson.

Edith and William look to have married in 1920 and had four children, Ethel, Vera, Jeffery and Betty.

It appears the family lives in and around the area at the turn of the century with the Dixon's living at Crowle Avenue in 1901, my grandfather being born in Wilfreds Terrace, Raven Street, and my great grandparents giving their address as Crowle Street in 1905.

Batchelor Family Of Lincolnshire

Up until today when I revisited this family I had a Charlotte Esentoun Batchelor, born abt 1831 and married to Richard Dixon in 1852. Now looking again I think her first name was either Esentoun or Esenton. She appeard to marry inder the name Esentoun Charlotte Batchelor, and looking today I found what I'm sure is her with her family in 1841 (how many Esento(u)n Batchelors can there be in Lincolnshire?? )

In 1841 her name is spelt Esenton, and her brothers and sisters have some brilliant names!!

Looking at the Family search website there seems to be a couple of varient spellings for Kesia - Kezziania and Kuzziah, and the 1851 census has her as Kezziah.

I also have a Carrington born 1829 from the 1841 census and one born 1840 from the 1851 census??

Esenton Batchelor would have been my Great Great Great Grandmother, and married Richard Dixon in 1852 in Glanford Brigg. From the censuses thereon, she seems to use the name Charlotte. She appears to have died in Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire aged between 46 and 48 in 1879. He death is listed under the name Easington Charlotte Dixon in quarter 3.

So far I've been unable to find her in 1851, but she appears not to have been living with her parents at this time.

So I wonder if her name was Esenton, Esentoun - probably less likely IMO to have been Easington??? But if you have details on the family with what her name actually was drop me an email :o)

Tracing The McDonnell's Forward

Having come to another standstill with the McDonnell line going back I thought I'd have a look at them going forward to see what I could find out.

Untill the 1911 census is released, or I win the lottery and can afford to buy certificates willy nilly, then this remains speculation, an educated guess at most. If you recognise any of the names here and would like to get in touch, that would be fab, my email address is top right of this page!

Mary and John had 10 children between 1897 and 1916. This I have evidence of, firstly the 1901 census, and secondly I have been in contact with Park descendants on Genes Reunited.

In Q3 of 1914 I have the birth of a John McDonnell in Hull, mothers maiden surname is Brooks. 9d 524.

I think Arthur and Jane look as though they have done their fair share of populating the area between 1913 and 1919, but maybe there are more between their marriage in 1905 and 1913 - If all the Spencer McDonnell children above are theirs.

Putting a face to a name

I have been very lucky!!

I recently made contact with Angie and Diane who have been able to identify pictures of my great great grandmother Alice Dixon. It's a great feeling when you can put a picture to the name in your tree. I now have just one more face to put to the tree to have pictures of all my great great grandparents.

I think one of the things I have enjoyed most about researching my family tree is going through all the old photographs. The old ones I find especially fascinating, they are on very thick card, and just the touch of them takes you back so many years. When you see photo's today, they are all on glossy photo paper, or on a digital camera. There is something about seeing an old original that takes you back to the time your ancestors lived.

I must also thank John who has sent me some of his pictures, I am waiting for the moment I can bear to part with the laptop for a couple of weeks as the disk drive has given up the ghost and I can't read anything off it! I am really looking forward to taking a look at the pictures!!
