Chasing the McDonnell's - Part 2

OK...... After some discussion on Rootschat and some help from the Leeds mailing list I am back to looking for a Peter.

I am going to have to look through all the varients for McDonnell I think to see if Peter crops up there. If not I can go back to Michael.

I have a pen and paper at the ready to note down all the possibles and try to whittle them down from there.

Genes Reunited

This is a great site :o)

I've just had another load of 'Hot Matches' through, and although most of them are probably nothing, it's great when you find someone who might just have one of your ancestors in their tree.

One of the things I love most about growing my family tree is making contact with people from the ever expanding branches. It's fantastic being able to learn about the names in my tree and putting a story, or a photo to bring them to life.

Unknown Photos - Part 1

Every now and then when I'm resting the braincells from searching thru census records and the like I'll post up some of my unknown piccies.

This one says Boram Wood Boys School on the back. Anyone with any ideas on the date please get in touch :o)

I think this may be one of my Boyd's as they were from Croydon.

Jekyll

Am loving this series !!!

BBC1 9pm on a Saturday Night :o)

Popular actor James Nesbitt (Murphy's Law, Bloody Sunday) is to take the lead role in the highly-anticipated series Jekyll on BBC ONE.

Writer Steven Moffat (Coupling, Doctor Who) has taken a modern twist on the classic tale of scientific misadventure which he describes as, "Somewhere between a modern horror story and The Odd Couple," whilst producers Elaine Cameron and Jeffrey Taylor comment: "The series is a remarkable conspiracy thriller - more Spooks than Robert Louis Stevenson."

James Nesbitt comments: "Jekyll is modern, contemporary and cutting-edge – I am excited about exploring the comedy and darkness in both characters."

It is 2006 and there's a new Dr Jekyll, with an old problem - Mr Hyde. But they have a deal - a body share – and an impossible life is somehow lived.

What Hyde doesn't know is that Jekyll is married. There's a wife and two children he'll do anything to protect from his dark side.

With all the resources of modern technology, and the best surveillance hardware, he's determined to keep his dark side in line. He's done a deal with his own devil.

What neither of them knows: an ancient organisation, with limitless wealth and power, is monitoring their every move, and a plan over a century in the making is coming to fruition.

The return of Dr Jekyll is no accident…

The drama series will start filming in September 2006. Executive Producers are Beryl Vertue and Steven Moffat. The series was commissioned by Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, Jane Tranter, and BBC Head of Independent Drama, John Yorke.

Beryl Vertue says: "The scripts are brilliant – scary, funny, and full of the unexpected. We are delighted about James Nesbitt, one of the few genuine stars who has the range needed to play this extraordinary role."

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, adds: "Steven's Jekyll takes a legendary story and places it firmly in the modern world.

"It will be high concept, intelligent and utterly engrossing as we focus on a man whose life is literally split in half."

Jekyll is a Hartswood Films Production in association with Stage Screen Productions for BBC ONE.

Chasing the McDonnell's - Part 1

OK My McDonnell's .........

Here is where I am at the moment......

Peter McDonnell
Parents: Michael McDonnell & Add Mother
Birth: abt 1842
Leeds, Yorkshire, England
Death:

Elizabeth Ann Ayre
Parents: William Ayre & Mary Ann Teal
Birth: 1854
Sculcoates Hull Yorkshire
Death:

Marriage — 1874 in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, East Riding, England

Children

Mary Ann McDonnell F 1876 in Hull Yorkshire England
William McDonnell M 1880 in Hull Yorkshire England
Peter McDonnell M 1882 in Hull Yorkshire England
Edward McDonnell M 30 August 1883 in Myton, Kingston Upon Hull, Hull, England
Arthur McDonnell M 1885 in Hull Yorkshire England

Firstly lets look at Elizabeth Ann Ayre .....

My Great Grandfather Edward McDonnell b1883 in Myton, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire. His parents are listed on his b/cert as Peter McDonnell and Elizabeth Ann Ayre.

I could only find a marriage for Peter McDonnell and Ann Ayre.

I just ordered that marriage certificate and it does say Ann on it (no middle name)

On tracing the family on the censuses it looks like she did use Ann in 1881 and Elizabeth in 1891.

I can find a birth which fits in with Elizabeth...Name: Elizabeth Ann Ayre
Birth: Jun 1854 - Sculcoates, Yorkshire - East Riding. This fits in with the cesnuses birth year wise.

The marriage in Sculcoates in 1874 lists Peter as a Merchant Seaman, and birth cert for Edward lists him as a Dock Labourer.

On the 1861 census I can find an Elizabeth Ann with her parents, father William is listed as an Oil Miller, which is the same occupation as listed on the marriage certificate for Ann & Peter.

I am pretty sure Ann of the marriage certificate is actually Elizabeth Ann of Edwards birth certificate and she just dropped the Elizabeth to get married?

I have chatted about this with the peeps on Rootschat and looking at all the information it looks like they are one and the same.

Now I have a problem with Peter McDonnell. Although I can find him on two censuses, 1881 and 1891 with the family I can't find any record of a birth for Peter McDonnell in 1840-1842 (as indicated by these censuses). I have searched through from 1837 to about 1847 and have also used
Yorkshire BMD .

Nowt, nada, nothing !!!!!!

I have found a Michael McDonnell born in Leeds Town in 1841, I wonder if this may be Peter ??? His wife had a habit of using different names, I wonder if maybe Peter did also ???

The family of Michael b1841 I have found I think on the 1841 census ........

Name: Michael McDonnela
Age: 6 Mo
Estimated birth year: abt 1840
Gender: Male
Where born: Yorkshire, England

Civil parish: Leeds Town
Hundred: Leeds Borough
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Registration district: Leeds
Sub-registration district: Leeds North

John McDonnela 7
Michael McDonnela 30
Michael McDonnela 6 Mo
Sebby McDonnela 30

It is transcribed as McDonnela, but the census clearly says McDonnel.

Occupation of father = Labourer - fits but not an unusual occupation. Father is listed as born in Ireland.

Mother Sebby born in Leeds 1811.

What could Sebby be short for ?? or is that a full name ??

I am having a little think and coming back to the elusive McDonnells later :o)

Going back past the first census

I have found a really helpful website.

Family History Online

They publish the records complied by Family History Societies. They have loads of information like parish registers, memorial inscriptions, censuses, poor law documents and more.

I've just gone back another generation on the Taylors with its help !!!

WOW - Look at these pictures !!

I posted this picture (inspired by posting about it yesterday) to Rootschat photo board to see if anyone could do something with the poor lady at the back and her missing eyes. This is the original picture.....

And these are three of the pictures posted back, there are more on the forum under Unknown Pictures - Family Portrait.

How cool are they ??????

Next New Link

Rootschat

It's in the sidebar too.

What a great website, the people there are very friendly and helpful. With the help of a couple of members I discovered that one of my ancestors had been listed in the birth index as Grace, when he should have been George. I'd never have found that without their help. I ordered his birth certificate to prove it and it was right!

If you get the chance take a look through their Photo Restoration section here --> Clicky Some of the things they can do is amazing !!

Taking of Photos.......

I have just come across a fantastic website!!

Genealogy Photo Exchange

The idea is you can send in your unidentified, or partly identified old photos and they put them in a gallery where they can be viewed and hopefully identified by someone else !!!!

Great idea!!

The link is also the first so far in the sidebar !!

Putting a face to a name

I have been very lucky!!

I recently made contact with Angie and Diane who have been able to identify pictures of my great great grandmother Alice Dixon. It's a great feeling when you can put a picture to the name in your tree. I now have just one more face to put to the tree to have pictures of all my great great grandparents.

I think one of the things I have enjoyed most about researching my family tree is going through all the old photographs. The old ones I find especially fascinating, they are on very thick card, and just the touch of them takes you back so many years. When you see photo's today, they are all on glossy photo paper, or on a digital camera. There is something about seeing an old original that takes you back to the time your ancestors lived.

I must also thank John who has sent me some of his pictures, I am waiting for the moment I can bear to part with the laptop for a couple of weeks as the disk drive has given up the ghost and I can't read anything off it! I am really looking forward to taking a look at the pictures!!

Before I go to bed.........

Here's how to research your family history if you are a little yellow duck (I think it's a duck anyway) .............

Hat Lady

This is one of my favourite pictures, I only wish I knew who she was?????

Hello and Welcome

Hello and welcome to my genealogy blog.

I started looking at my family tree a few months back and have become seriously addicted ever since.

I have met lots of people, mainly through Genes Reunited since I started out who have helped me along the way. A big thanks to them all. It has been a really fantastic added extra to buliding my tree, to meet and speak to people who are connected to it!

I am working on a website and forum for anyone connected with the family, the links to which will appear soon.

Bye for now
