Exciting Murrell News!!

After trawling through the census for 1901 to find which district Robinson Terrace was in I eventually found it. Both 24 and 25 Robinson Terrace were listed as Uninhabited/In Occupation. Not really having a clue what this meant I posted on Rootschat and got some really interesting information. Also written in between the two (24 & 25) was Oddfellows Arms.

Uninhabited/In Occupation basically means that no one lived there but the building was being used, as a pub in this case.

Interestingly the parents of John Lisle were living at number 23 Robinson Terrace in 1901.

The Oddfellows Arms was on the corner of Robinson Terrace and Fowler Terrace, with the living accomodation for the pub being located at 36 Fowler Terrace. By 1901 William and Margaret, or John Lisle and Margaret were not living there. The new landlord of the pub was.

I am still searching hard for Margaret, Daisy and William (jnr) Murrell in 1901 on the census, perhaps they were hiding??

The name Oddfellows Arms appears to relate to the Oddfellows Friendly Society I wonder if William was a member?

I've had some really lovely replies, help and information from Rootschat and from the Sunderland List - which I posted to after learning about the pub being called the Oddfellows Arms.

It's great to be able to put more information to the lives of William and Margaret!

Partial Implementation of Plan C

Well my impatient nature got the better of me and I emailed the Fulham Archives while I'm waiting for the birth certificate of William b1899 to come through. I suspect it will get delayed in the Christmas post unless the good people of the GRO are having a rush on getting things sent out before Christmas.

Plan C - Murrell

Plan C - William b1872 in Bethnal Green died in (I think, from memory as I am at work) 1932 in Fulham, if I can find a copy of his Will there might be some clues as to whether this was indeed the same William as French William.

a) Ask the Fulham Archives if they have copies of Wills. If not, see option b)

b) Apply to York for a copy of William Murrell's Will (if any) to see if William or Daisy are listed in there!

If anyone has any ideas for a plan "D" please let me know!!!!

William Murrell - Good News/Bad News

Well, many thanks to the fab information from the Sunderland rootsweb mailing list, I now know that a Beer House Keeper was someone licensed to sell beer from their living room!! (or kitchen, or wherever LOL) Their house. I have also learned that after the introduction of the 1869 Wine and Beerhouse Act, that you had to apply to the Justices for a license in order to run a beer house.

The bad news..........

After being given the details for the Tyne and Wear Archive Services and giving them a call, I have found that the licensing records from Sunderland appear not to have survived!!!

Enter plan B........

I have ordered the birth certificate of William Murrell b1899 to see if William Murrell b1872 has a different occupation by this time. *crosses fingers* lets hope he was doing something more traceable by then LOL

If that doesn't bring anything up, then I'm not sure where I'll go from there :o(

But I'm not ready to give up just yet!!!!

*formulates plan C whilst waiting for the certificate to arrive*

Daisy Eugenie Murrell b 1896

Yay, thanks to the speediness of the GRO I now have her birth certificate, William is listed as a Beer House Keeper, is that a posh term for a Publican??? LOL

Daisy was born at 24 Robinson Terrace and William is listed as the informant , address Feather, 24 Robinson Terrace.

I have asked the good people of the Rootsweb Sunderland list if they have any more information, as google and historical directories are bringing up nothing at the moment.

William Murrell b1872 - God Knows Where LOL

Latest update on William Murell is that I have ordered his daughters birth certificate from the GRO in the hope of getting some more information to help trace him.

Also Ancestry now have online the Cambridge University Alumni details as below.

About Cambridge University Alumni, 1261-1900
This list of all known students, graduates, and officers at the University of Cambridge, England, from 1261 to 1900 offers information from various sources. Every entry offers important information which may include any of the following: notable accomplishments, occupation, birth date, birth place, other schooling, spouse's name, parent's names, siblings and other important associations. Alumni Cantabrigienses was compiled by John and J.A. Venn, former presidents of Gonville and Caius and Queens' Colleges respectively. This list of all known students, graduates, and officers at the University of Cambridge offers information from various sources besides the university's records, which date from around 1261. The entire collection contains 10 volumes in 2 sets. The first set covers alumni from the earliest records to 1752 and the second set from 1752 to 1900. The compilation was completed in 1956.

Bad news there is I can't find any trace of William in the database, he was supposed to have been there and possibly rowed for the Cambridge Blues, but got expelled for getting up to no good LOL

WoooHooooo

New lappy :)

I couldn't get a decent picture so here's a library one !!
So after about 2 years of the old one going back, being half fixed and then getting the same problem 6 months later, then about 25 phone calls over the last two weeks, a visit to PC World with a poor amount of vouchers yesterday ....a trip back home to get the reciept for the original lappy, and having to tell the manager at PC World if he didn't sort it today my head might explode all over the shop......I got the new laptop!!!!!
Tip for anyone none too pleased with their voucher amount from Coverplan, the store can call up and ask for more for the machine you think is best matched to the spec of your old one. I managed to get them to agree to an extra £80 as the old laptop had a separate graphics card, but the one they based the vouchers on didn't.
Anyway, I love it :) and I'm now back online properly!!! I'll (not too sadly) be saying taraaaa to the macbook, which has been great for keeping up with my emails but doesn't seem to display Ancestry properly :( So now I'm seeing all the new and lovely (I hope) things Vista has to offer, so far so good - but I've yet to hook up the printer and scanner *eek*
