Exciting Murrell News!!

After trawling through the census for 1901 to find which district Robinson Terrace was in I eventually found it. Both 24 and 25 Robinson Terrace were listed as Uninhabited/In Occupation. Not really having a clue what this meant I posted on Rootschat and got some really interesting information. Also written in between the two (24 & 25) was Oddfellows Arms.

Uninhabited/In Occupation basically means that no one lived there but the building was being used, as a pub in this case.

Interestingly the parents of John Lisle were living at number 23 Robinson Terrace in 1901.

The Oddfellows Arms was on the corner of Robinson Terrace and Fowler Terrace, with the living accomodation for the pub being located at 36 Fowler Terrace. By 1901 William and Margaret, or John Lisle and Margaret were not living there. The new landlord of the pub was.

I am still searching hard for Margaret, Daisy and William (jnr) Murrell in 1901 on the census, perhaps they were hiding??

The name Oddfellows Arms appears to relate to the Oddfellows Friendly Society I wonder if William was a member?

I've had some really lovely replies, help and information from Rootschat and from the Sunderland List - which I posted to after learning about the pub being called the Oddfellows Arms.

It's great to be able to put more information to the lives of William and Margaret!

Partial Implementation of Plan C

Well my impatient nature got the better of me and I emailed the Fulham Archives while I'm waiting for the birth certificate of William b1899 to come through. I suspect it will get delayed in the Christmas post unless the good people of the GRO are having a rush on getting things sent out before Christmas.

Monday 17 December 2007

Plan C - Murrell

Plan C - William b1872 in Bethnal Green died in (I think, from memory as I am at work) 1932 in Fulham, if I can find a copy of his Will there might be some clues as to whether this was indeed the same William as French William.

a) Ask the Fulham Archives if they have copies of Wills. If not, see option b)

b) Apply to York for a copy of William Murrell's Will (if any) to see if William or Daisy are listed in there!

If anyone has any ideas for a plan "D" please let me know!!!!

William Murrell - Good News/Bad News

Well, many thanks to the fab information from the Sunderland rootsweb mailing list, I now know that a Beer House Keeper was someone licensed to sell beer from their living room!! (or kitchen, or wherever LOL) Their house. I have also learned that after the introduction of the 1869 Wine and Beerhouse Act, that you had to apply to the Justices for a license in order to run a beer house.

The bad news..........

After being given the details for the Tyne and Wear Archive Services and giving them a call, I have found that the licensing records from Sunderland appear not to have survived!!!

Enter plan B........

I have ordered the birth certificate of William Murrell b1899 to see if William Murrell b1872 has a different occupation by this time. *crosses fingers* lets hope he was doing something more traceable by then LOL

If that doesn't bring anything up, then I'm not sure where I'll go from there :o(

But I'm not ready to give up just yet!!!!

*formulates plan C whilst waiting for the certificate to arrive*

Friday 14 December 2007

Daisy Eugenie Murrell b 1896

Yay, thanks to the speediness of the GRO I now have her birth certificate, William is listed as a Beer House Keeper, is that a posh term for a Publican??? LOL

Daisy was born at 24 Robinson Terrace and William is listed as the informant , address Feather, 24 Robinson Terrace.

I have asked the good people of the Rootsweb Sunderland list if they have any more information, as google and historical directories are bringing up nothing at the moment.

William Murrell b1872 - God Knows Where LOL

Latest update on William Murell is that I have ordered his daughters birth certificate from the GRO in the hope of getting some more information to help trace him.

Also Ancestry now have online the Cambridge University Alumni details as below.

About Cambridge University Alumni, 1261-1900
This list of all known students, graduates, and officers at the University of Cambridge, England, from 1261 to 1900 offers information from various sources. Every entry offers important information which may include any of the following: notable accomplishments, occupation, birth date, birth place, other schooling, spouse's name, parent's names, siblings and other important associations. Alumni Cantabrigienses was compiled by John and J.A. Venn, former presidents of Gonville and Caius and Queens' Colleges respectively. This list of all known students, graduates, and officers at the University of Cambridge offers information from various sources besides the university's records, which date from around 1261. The entire collection contains 10 volumes in 2 sets. The first set covers alumni from the earliest records to 1752 and the second set from 1752 to 1900. The compilation was completed in 1956.

Bad news there is I can't find any trace of William in the database, he was supposed to have been there and possibly rowed for the Cambridge Blues, but got expelled for getting up to no good LOL

WoooHooooo

New lappy :)

I couldn't get a decent picture so here's a library one !!
So after about 2 years of the old one going back, being half fixed and then getting the same problem 6 months later, then about 25 phone calls over the last two weeks, a visit to PC World with a poor amount of vouchers yesterday ....a trip back home to get the reciept for the original lappy, and having to tell the manager at PC World if he didn't sort it today my head might explode all over the shop......I got the new laptop!!!!!
Tip for anyone none too pleased with their voucher amount from Coverplan, the store can call up and ask for more for the machine you think is best matched to the spec of your old one. I managed to get them to agree to an extra £80 as the old laptop had a separate graphics card, but the one they based the vouchers on didn't.
Anyway, I love it :) and I'm now back online properly!!! I'll (not too sadly) be saying taraaaa to the macbook, which has been great for keeping up with my emails but doesn't seem to display Ancestry properly :( So now I'm seeing all the new and lovely (I hope) things Vista has to offer, so far so good - but I've yet to hook up the printer and scanner *eek*

Exciting News - The Burnt Documents

No, this doesn't mean I have my laptop sorted and it's printing off some hot news on the family tree, but it's just as exciting!!

Ancestry are starting to upload the WW1 Service Records.

In 1940, during WW2, a German bomb hit the War Office repository in Arnside Street, London; destroying over half of the WW1 service records stored there. Many of the records which survived were damaged by fire and water and are located in series WO 363 at The National Archives. These were microfilmed by TNA as part of a conservation project.

Ancestry are now making these available through their website, starting with surnames A-C.

www.ancestry.co.uk

In my opinion this website is well worth the subscription, especially good as a starting point for researching your tree.

Enjoy!!!

ps Still awaiting confirmation from PC World/The Tech Guys/Coverplan, who appear to each in turn "not deal with this" but it looks good for receiving vouchers to replace the now lost laptop.

Laptop News!

There is none!! Which may or may not be a good thing!!

Hopefully by the end of the week I should ……….

a) Have it back all fixed and working :o)

b) Have some pretty vouchers for a new one

c) Be pulling my hair out and screeching at PC World!

I am secretly hoping that option ‘b’ is the one I am writing about come the weekend!

I have loads of things to add to my tree and lots of you lovely people who have emailed me that I want to send reports to, but the program for this is sitting on the lappy. Also my main tree is kept on Ancestry.co.uk and for some reason this website wont display properly on the macbook :o( All the dates and timelines are all over the place and it makes it really difficult to try to add things *sigh*

I am still also awaiting deliver of my copy of Wearside Battalion by John Sheen, the publishers say it’s “booked in” but Play are saying they don’t have any copies as yet! I was hoping this would prove an interesting read while my laptop was away. Never mind, patience is a virtue – so I’m told :o)

While I’m waiting for full service to be restored, I’ll leave you with this, which I found here à http://lest-we-forget.com/The_Outhouse/

GENEALOGY POX

WARNING: Very contagious to adults.

SYMPTOMS: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates and places. Patient has blank expression and is sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind except feverishly looking for records at libraries and courthouses. Has compulsion to write letters. Swears at mail carrier when s/he does not leave mail. Frequents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins and remote, desolate country areas. Makes secret calls at night. Hides phone bills.

TREATMENT: There is no known cure. Medication is useless. Disease is not fatal, but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogical magazines, and be given a quiet corner in the house where s/he can be alone with his/her computer.

REMARKS: The unusual nature of this disease is.....the sicker the patient gets, the more s/he enjoys it!

Boyd Marriage

I think I have found the marriage of Silas George Boyd and Elizabeth Wilson (nee Bowyer) but only one side of the happy couple is transcribed.

There is an Elizabeth Wilson marrying in Croydon in 1890, no spouse details, I think this one must be it.

Marriages Q2 1890
WILSON Elizabeth Croydon 2a 361

Boyd, Boyd, Boyd, Boyd, Boyd's

*sigh*

I thought I’d have a little look at lunchtime today for the Boyd’s. Every now and then when I get a bit bogged down with one branch I have a little look at another to see if I can fill a bit in somewhere!!

Now I have more blinkin’ questions !!! LOL

OK The Boyd’s ……..Lets start with Great Granddad Boyd – Frederick George, 1892-1956. His birth certificate states he is the son of Silas George Boyd and Elizabeth Boyd, late Wilson, formerly Boywer.

Pretty sure I have Elizabeth on the 1901 census with Frederick George, but no Silas George. Also with an Alice and Eliza (transcribed as Elliot) Booser. I’m pretty sure the census doesn’t say Booser – or Boyd, or even Bowyer, but I can’t work out what it does say.  RG13; Piece: 637; Folio: 18; Page: 27. If anyone is feeling in a translatey kind of mood!

I have a marriage for Silas Boyd in 1888 but not to an Elizabeth…….and no other marriages after that for a Silas Boyd.

Marriages Q2 1888

-------------------------------------------

Boyd  Silas George              Croydon  2a 331

Butler  Jane                       Croydon  2a 331

Greenslade  Ann Mary          Croydon  2a 331

SAYERS  William                 Croydon  2a 331

-------------------------------------------

No way of telling which one of these lovely ladies married the Boyd though, without ordering a certificate!

So it looks like I’ve set myself yet another task LOL

…….and still no laptop!!!!!!!!!! ß Look how PC World make me overexclamate!!!

Still Without PC

*sighs*

Well, credit to PC World they have this time outdone themselves..........not only did they originally fail to even bother to look at the disk drawer which was reported as not working, they then called me Saturday to ask what was wrong with my laptop!!

*sighs more*

So I told them, they said it was working.

*further sighs*

I asked if I could come collect it. They said they would run some more tests and call me. So I come off the phone and notice a voicemail left about 15 minutes earlier. Voicemail - from same bloke at PC World - advising they have found what's wrong with the laptop and are sending off for the part.

*sobs uncontrollably with frustration*

Another call seems to clear things up and they do indeed need to fix it (tell me something I don't know!!) and will call me when the part has been replced.

Hey, it's only about the 6th time the blinkin' thing has been back over the last couple of years!

Anyway, if anyone is expecting an email from me, I can't :o( All my email addresses are off in the workshop with my laptop, so if you need to contact me the best email address is the one at the top right on this blog.

*assumes some kind of meditation position and breathes deeply*

William Charles Murrell b1872

Gosh, well where do I start?

I have had the good fortune to be put in contact with two lovely, helpful people who are connected to the Murrell One Name Study. With over 60 years of research between them into the Murrell name and its variants I spoke with a lady in Canada who helped go through my Murrell information and suggested I write to the person who holds all the information on the one name study in the UK. She gave me some information on the tree which might contain my Murrell's, and was proved correct when I received a reply to my letter.

The information which they have come up with has proved to be a bit of a double edged sword. It blows a lot of family stories out of the water, going back over five generations. It would appear the my great great grandfather was probably - well almost definitely not from France as we all thought. Nor were his parents, grandparents, or great grandparents. In fact the tree, as far back as it goes, originates in Ipswich, moves to Stoke Newington, Hackney and Bethnal Green. Maybe there is a French connection somewhere, but it's not, it would appear, where we thought it was. The sad thing is that my great grandmother and her family would have moved within a few miles of where her father lived, just a few years after he died. Family stories had him running off to Spain when my great great grandmother and him parted, and I guess my great grandmother would have never even thought to look for him. On the upside I have also been put in contact with someone who is a descendant from the same Murrell tree :o) - how exciting is that?!?! I am looking forward to hearing all about the Murrells.

I'm also hoping to investigate Mr William Charles Murrell and find out why he moved from London to Sunderland in the late 1800's. Over 60 years of experience with the contacts I have met pointing me in the direction of the Ipswich tree cannot be ignored, but I feel I need to find out more, the how's and why's - to tread William's footsteps from London, to Sunderland and back again - all be it that I'll probably be using the internet to tread most of them ;o)

Coool

 It works!!!!

Testing out to see how posting via email works!!

And also to have a moan that a) the book I ordered as per the last post has had its release date delayed *sigh* It’s now not going to be published until about the 20th November. Lets hope that it doesn’t get delayed again!!!

Moan b) is that my laptop is still not fixed, I’m going to try really hard not to start too much on this one as I could go on for about 20 pages worth!! Needless to say I am not happy, and that I’d advise anyone not to bother with an extended warranty as to be quite honest they are kak at actually really sorting out any problems!!

Monday 22 October 2007

Quick hellllloooooo

Not much doing on the family history front as the lappy has gone back to be fixed!!

In the meantime I have ordered a book on the 20th Battalion Durham Light infantry which my great grandfather served in. If I am lucky he may get a mention, but if not it will be an interesting, if not emotional read, hearing about what it was actually like during WWI where he was serving.

This is the book, hopefully it wont take long to arrive! Wearside Pals: The 20th (Service) Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry by John Sheen

How did you find me?

I have had 1,295 visitors since June this year.

Here's a list of the searches people have used to find this blog.

I would love to hear from you if you find me here and think you may be related, or even if you're not and would like me to post up something to help you find your family!

One of the things I love about researching my family is getting in contact with people who extend through the branches of my tree, no matter how far. It's always really interesting to hear about my ancestors and what others have found out about them, and then sharing what I have.

It's how you put the picture together and learn more.

Researching The Great War

At the moment I'm on a steep learning curve, researching military records for my Great Grandad. It's delving into the unknown for me, but with the help from the fab people at Rootschat I'm getting there. I've hear a lot of stories from my Grandad about how terrible the First World War was. My Great Grandad was in the trenches and was injured, loosing his best friend. I want to learn more about what it was like, and what those men, and my Great Grandad went through. I'm hoping to learn more about which regiment he was in and therefore where he was in the grand scheme of things, and find out what happened to him and his regiment.

First stop was The National Archives (TNA) where I found his Navy records. From there I think I have now located his Medal Cards. He served in the Durham Light Infantry, and looks like he rose quickly through the ranks from Private, to Acting Warrant Officer, and then to Seargent. I'm not sure if there was anything in between as the medal cards tell me he was a Private and Acting Warrant Officer, and a picture of him during the war tells me he was a Seargent.

I hope to learn more soon!

Alfred Bell Taylor 1896-1994

Alfred Bell Taylor

Alfred Bell Taylor was born on 21st June 1896 in Sunderland, Durham England. He had one brother Frederick and a sister called Nellie.

His father was Frederick Taylor and his mother Elizabeth Ellen Bell. In 1906 Elizabeth died in childbirth along with their fourth child, a boy called John Robert. Alfred and his brother and sister went to live with their grandparents Jonathan and Hannah Taylor (nee Black) as Frederick went on to (possibly) marry again, and have more children.
Frederick Taylor

Elizabeth Ellen Bell

In 1901 Jonathan and Hannah lived at 29 Nile Street in Sunderland, Durham, England. With them at that time were their son William, their daughter Elizabeth and her husband William Douglass with their children James and Stanley. Also living with them was their granddaughter Florence Taylor, born in 1889. Florence was their son George’s daughter. They also had three boarders as they ran a boarding house.

At some point around 1906 after the death of his mother, Alfred went to live with Jonathan and Hannah. Jonathan died in 1910 and as Hannah went both deaf and blind Florence stayed on and helped run the boarding house and look after Frederick and Elizabeth’s children, they called her Aunty Florrie.

In 7th October aged 17 he joined the Royal Navy where he served upon the Victory I, in the Empire of India, on the Fearless, Victory VII, Victory I and then lastly the Fearless. Whilst serving on the Fearless during an attack Alfred lost some of his hearing and was discharged from the Navy in 1916.

Alfred and Daisy's Wedding Day
On 14th August 1915, whilst serving in the Navy during WW1, Alfred married Daisy Eugenie Murrell, the daughter of Margaret Georgina Coutts and William Murrell. They married in Weymouth where Alfred was serving at the time.

After being discharged from the Navy he went to the Army and enlisted. He signed up with his cousin Stanley Douglass, with whom Alfred was close friends. He served in the trenches and reached at least the rank of sergeant as pictured below.
Alfred was serving in the trenches when they were blown in and his leg was trapped. He lost his best friend and his leg was injured and he was sent home to recover. He came back home with Stanley Douglass.

Alfred and Daisy had ten children the first of whom was born in 1916, the last in 1932.

Around the 1920’s Alfred ran a fruit and veg shop called the Nut King and Universal Fruit Store in Sunderland Market. He then ran a record shop and then a bike shop.

Alfred then got a job working for the Sunderland District Omnibus at the Newbottle depot and the family moved from Sunderland to Shiney Row as it was difficult for him to get to the bus depot for a 4.30am start from Sunderland.

He also opened a shop called ABS Libraries, which started off life as a lending library, but which Alfred introduced sweets, tobacco, home made wine and home made ice cream to. His son, my grandfather, would work in the shop and cycle around a push bike with a box attached to the side in which the ice cream was sold from. The shop was shut when Daisy said it was too much for their son to run.

Shiney Row was primarily a pit village with several pits in the area, and with the closure of ABS Libraries their sons found work on the top of the coal mines, sorting through the stones which were brought up on a conveyor belt. After some time in this job it was expected that they would go down the mines and they were given training on the pits training tunnel where they had to learn to control the pit ponies going down the mines. When Daisy found out that her sons were to go down the mines she went to their manager and took their cards and ripped them up, leaving the boys unemployed. Daisy didn't know that her eldest son was already working down the mines.

The family moved back to Sunderland and lived in Murton Street in a large house with a basement and an attic room. The Taylor’s lived in the basement, although their bedrooms were in the attic. Ted and Barbara Taylor lived on the next floor, Margaret Coutts her third husband and daughters lived another floor up. On the next floor lived the Lisle family.

Alfred worked at J A Joblings (who also made Pyrex glass) polishing television tubes until 1936 when he hitchhiked South looking for work. Employment was hard to find in the North and the government was offering a grant to families who could find employment and housing in any part of the country for all family members of working age. Alfred found a job for himself and his two second eldest sons and the family moved to the South of England. His eldest son had work and had moved out, but came back home as the family were preparing to move, and came with them. The government paid their moving costs and for their furniture to be transported and the family all moved.

Alfred had no trade when he left Sunderland in 1936, and worked as a servant for the RAF. When one day my granddad won a chicken in a raffle, and brought it back on the tube from London. Alfred decided to make a chicken shed for it. When the chicken laid eggs, he decided to make a proper coup, and chicken run, and bought more hens. He carved the whole thing using a penknife and my granddad told him to get proper tools and work on the bomb damage as war had now broken out. He worked as a carpenter on the bomb damage and then went on to work at Heathrow airport and helped construct the first building on the site in 1942.

In 1952 aged 56 Alfred and Daisy cycled from their home in Middlesex back to Sunderland on a motorized tandem after their children had said they wouldn’t be able to do it. This was reported in the local paper, the Sunderland Echo.

In 1965 Alfred and Daisy celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary with their friends and family.

Daisy died in 1979, and Alfred in 1994.

~*~

I was born in 1972 and don’t really remember Daisy, but will always remember Alfred, known as Gaga or Poppy with a pipe in his mouth. I can remember visiting as a small child and sitting in his living room with him lighting his pipe in his green chair. Even today I love the smell of a pipe burning reminds as it me of him.

Some Updates

Hi all *waves*

School holidays have kinda taken over at the moment althought I do have some great new info on the Taylors!!

Between me and Mel we have found the elusive Florrie and managed to find out she was the daughter of George Taylor, who was the son of Jonathan Taylor and Hannah Black. She went to live with Jonathan and Hannah at some point before the 1901 census and helped to look after the children of Frederick Taylor and Elizabeth Ellen Bell after Elizabeth died and Frederick remarried, the children from his first marriage went to live with their grandparents. Elizabeth died in 1906 in childbirth with her fourth child and Jonathan died four years later in 1910. Hannah ran a theatrical boarding house and Florence, or Florrie as she was known, helped run this and look after the kids as Hannah went both blind and deaf. Big thanks to Mel without whom I'd not know half of this!

Florence Taylor b1888 - Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland

Hi all

Wondering if anyone can help with what this says?

It is from the 1901 census for Florence Taylor, and is in the column at the end to note if a person was deaf and dumb, blind, Lunatic, Imbecile, feeble minded.

Please leave me a comment or drop me a mail if you have any ideas.

Thanks :o)

Tracing the Taylors

Today I have decided to put some effort into the Taylor branch of my tree. I have been flitting back and forth between different branches of the tree filling in bits here and there and not feeling like I have got anywhere really. So am rolling up my sleeves and getting stuck in to tracing the Taylors, filling in the gaps and finding out what life was like for them, where they lived and what it was like in Northumberland and Durham at the time they lived there.

So far I have back to John Taylor who was born in Northumberland, I have no dates but am guessing around 1775. He married Mary Donaldson and their son Moses b1800 is the only child I have managed to trace. By the time the 1841 census was taken he was no longer at home with his parents.

Right now I should be working so I’ll leave it there for now and get stuck in later when I get home (with a little break later to watch a bit of CSI on the tellybox)

Updating

Hi all *waves*

Not much genealogy being done at the moment, it's the school holidays and so I'm being kept quite busy.

I'm hoping to write a bit on the Taylor branch of my tree soon but it may be a couple of weeks or so before I get around to it. Damn real life getting in the way of my family history researching LOL

Anyway, if anyone has any pictures of Shiney Row in Sunderland from around the 1920's to 1930's that would be fab if you could mail them to me, or of Murton Street, Sunderland from the same time period. If anyone arrives here searching the Taylor family from Northumberland, or Sunderland drop me a mail (address top right of the page) I am also looking for more information on Mary Donaldson, born in Northumberland (Belford)

Summer Holidays

Morning all *waves*

I've not done much genealogy over the last few days, it's the start of the school holidays and I have some time off work and am going to try to get some decorating done. It's good to give the braincells a rest from searching through censuses too. I tend to go at it for days looking and searching and then I get genealogists block LOL. A few days doing something else and I usually find what I'm looking for first time when I come back to it!

Harry Potter

Morning !!

Not much doing on the genealogy front over the last couple of days, I have been too busy reading the new Harry Potter with no TV, pooter or papers in case they spoilt the ending LOL

Phil queued at the local Tesco at midnight and picked us up two copies, so we didn't have to share LOL and I stayed up till nearly 3am reading. The up first thing Saturday morning to finish it off. Managed to finish by 7pm. Would have been earlier if I didn't have stuff to do LOL

I'm not spoilering the end or any of it here, but it was good !!!!
